Warning! Inglorious Basterds is not for the faint of heart or for everyone who does not enjoy a bit of gruesome scenes. Quentin Tarantino’s films have been around for what seems like since the beginning of time and they seem to only be getting better. This intense, action-packed movie tells the tale of Jewish Americans, known as the Basterds, as they go through Nazi-occupied France and barbarically eliminate as many Nazi German officers as they can. The Basterds, along with a Jewish woman named Shosanna, whose parents were killed by the Nazis, plot to kill the top German leaders. The Basterds and Shosanna remain completely unaware of each other throughout the film and both have separate plots to kill Hitler, Goering, Goebbels, and Bormann. The film shares a title with another World War II film from 1978; although Tarantino claims that it is in no way a remake of that film.
Sophomore Lauren Benish, who saw the movie states, “It was definitely one of the best movies that I’ve seen this year. It had the perfect balance of gore and violence but also comedy and suspense. I recommend it to everyone who doesn’t have a weak stomach to see it.”
Benish also says that war movies and comedies are her favorite types of films and “Seeing the two combined so seamlessly together was brilliant.” The New York Times Manohla Dargis’s review claims that the movie “Gives you a lot to chew on, though there’s plenty to gag on as well.”
The movie tends to drag on (153 minutes), but that is just the way Tarantino does it, whether it be dramatic fight scenes or extensive dialogue. Inglourious Basterds is one of the best films of the year and deserves three and a half stars out of four.
